Malaysian chain Oriental Kopi apologises, scraps CNY service charge increase after flak
Oriental Kopi in Malaysia has apologised for its announcement of a service charge hike over the Chinese New Year period.
A notice stating that the coffee chain will be adjusting its service charge from 10% to 15% on the first two days of the Lunar New Year, Jan 29 and Jan 30, sparked bashlash after it was posted online.
Many netizens slammed the move and said it was "not normal".
One user commented: "First time hearing about restaurants jacking up service charge during festive period."
According to online reports, Malaysia's Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said in a statement on Jan 20 that F&B establishments should not increase prices during festive periods. Members of the public are advised to lodge complaints against those that do so.
In a Facebook post on Jan 22, Oriental Kopi apologised and said: "We are very sorry for the trouble caused over the past few days.
"During this Chinese New Year, our service charges will remain unchanged, and no adjustments will be made.
"We are committed to providing you and your family and friends with the best dining experience during the festive season.
"During this joyous season, we sincerely look forward to welcoming you and your loved ones to enjoy delicious food and celebrate the new year together."
