Brazilian man arrested after allegedly trying to use 15 cloned ATM cards to withdraw cash
A 34-year-old Brazilian man was arrested for allegedly possessing cloned Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, said the police.
The police received a report on Nov 10 about an individual using suspicious cards to make cash withdrawals from an ATM.
Through extensive ground enquiries and investigations, officers from the Central Police Division established the suspect's identity and arrested him within nine hours of receiving the report.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly attempted to use 15 suspected cloned ATM cards to withdraw cash.
Officers seized cash of more than $2,000, 66 suspected cloned ATM cards and a mobile phone as case exhibits.
The man will be charged in court on Nov 12 with unauthorised access to computer material under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse Act 1993.
If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
The police said they take a serious view of anyone involved in the production or possession of cloned payment cards and that perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
They also advised the public to safeguard their card details, only use reliable websites for online payments and to contact their bank immediately if their cards are lost, stolen or used for unauthorised transactions.
