15 drivers were caught providing illegal cross-border ride-hailing services during enforcement operations by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), amid tip-offs from the National Private Hire Vehicles Association and National Taxi Association.

In a Facebook post on Nov 28, LTA said that the errant drivers were caught at land checkpoints, the airport and areas such as Arab Street and Ban San Street. All their vehicles have been impounded.

141 vehicles impounded since July

Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said in a separate Facebook post that the LTA had impounded 10 vehicles over the past week for offering illegal cross-border services.

Since July 2025, a total of 141 vehicles have been impounded.

She cautioned that unlicensed vehicles do not carry proper insurance coverage and may put commuters at risk. She urged the public to use only legal, licensed options for cross-border travel.

Only licensed taxis can legally cross the Causeway

According to LTA, only Singapore-registered and Malaysia-registered taxis are licensed to provide cross-border services approved by LTA and Malaysia's Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).

Malaysia-registered taxis must also obtain a Public Service Vehicle Licence (PSVL) and an ASEAN Public Service Vehicle Permit (PSVP). Private hire cars are not allowed to offer cross-border point-to-point services for hire or reward.

LTA reminded motorists that those caught providing illegal ride-hailing services face up to $3,000 fines and/or 6 months' jail, and possible vehicle forfeiture.

Members of the public who spot such activities may report them at go.gov.sg/report-illegal-rides.
