Welcome to Stomping Ground a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.

Visitors hoping for free Sunday parking at a new Toa Payoh Build-to-Order (BTO) development carpark may be surprised to find it isn't available.

Stomper CK, who moved into the estate in November 2025, told Stomp he noticed that free Sunday parking is not offered at the multi-storey carpark at Block 138 Lorong 1A Toa Payoh.

He said this was unexpected, especially since there are no nearby shopping malls or supermarkets near the estate.

"With Chinese New Year approaching, I was wondering why there is no free parking on Sundays," he said.

"I thought the Housing Board (HDB) aims to promote social interaction and foster stronger family ties by providing free parking at suitable carparks, why not our new BTO carparks?

According to a written parliamentary reply by the Ministry of National Development on Feb 3, the Free Parking Scheme (FPS) is introduced at suitable HDB carparks only after parking demand from residents has stabilised, and where there are sufficient lots to meet both residents' needs and the expected increase in visitor parking.

The ministry added that HDB has been monitoring parking demand at new estates such as Tengah and has begun progressively implementing FPS at suitable carparks there from Feb 1.
