Welcome to Stomping Ground — a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.

Two cars were seen occupying electric vehicle (EV) charging lots without plugging in at a Bedok carpark.

Stomper Melvin shared photos of the incident at Block 630 Bedok Reservoir Road on March 28 at about 9.09am.

The images show a white Mercedes-Benz and a black BYD car parked in lots marked “EV CHARGING ONLY” even though they were not connected to the charging points.

“Hogging EV charging lot but not charging at all,” said the Stomper.

“A major ground issue with EV adoption in Singapore is not just the number of chargers,” he said. “It is the misuse of EV charging lots.

“These lots are marked EV CHARGING ONLY, yet they are still being occupied by vehicles that are not charging.

“This can include internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrid vehicles or even EVs that are parked but not plugged in.”

He believes such behaviour prevents drivers who genuinely need to charge their vehicles from accessing the charger.

“Charging infrastructure becomes useless despite being installed,” he said. “It also creates unnecessary frustration between motorists and reduces confidence in Singapore’s EV readiness.”

Melvin said EV charging lots should be treated like petrol pump bays: “Park only when actively charging. Move off once charging is completed. Do not occupy the lot for convenience.”

He called for greater public awareness and stronger enforcement against the misuse of EV charging lots.

Last October, the Ministry of Transport said Singapore is expanding its EV charging infrastructure to support wider adoption and is on track to deploy 60,000 charging points by 2030.

Melvin, who drives an ICE car, told Stomp he does not plan on driving an EV until the charging infrastructure in Singapore and Malaysia is “more established and standardised”.

He hopes motorists will be more considerate to others.

“EV charging lots are for active charging, not for parking,” he said.
