'Cruel' sight of frogs and eels packed in tanks outside restaurant: SFA looking into case

Original article:

A woman was walking by a restaurant in Hoa Nam Building at Foch Road on July 13, when she noticed tanks full of frogs and eels -- a sight she described as "cruel".

Stomper Maddy, who had previously advocated for justice and kindness for crows trapped in a bird management enclosure, said: "I submit this as animal cruelty. They have been there for weeks.

"There are frogs jam-packed in the tanks and eels below. I hope their suffering can be relieved."

Maddy shared that she initially contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to give feedback, and was referred to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

"I know we eat animals, but I hope we can stop the cruelty - the animals are packed and likely starved there till someone buys them," Maddy told Stomp.

"We are a first-world country with third-world behaviour. I hope we will have compassion as we progress."

In response to a Stomp query, Chao Qian Seafood & BBQ Restaurant said: "We appreciate our patrons' input on our menu and operations. We'll definitely look into improving our display management for the frog and eels. Their insights help us serve our customers better."

Stomp has contacted SFA for more information.
