Woman feels cheated after Bedok cobbler charges $152 for glueing 2 pairs of shoes without stating price upfront
A woman who visited a cobbler shop to fix her shoes was shocked when she was quoted $152 for glueing the soles of two pairs.
Stomper Isabelle told Stomp that she visited Sleek Services Enterprises in Bedok on Nov 1 in hopes of repairing her Prada and Valentino heels.
"The staff recommended replacing the soles at $199 per pair," she recounted.
"I declined and asked for glueing instead but they didn't state the price for that upfront."
Isabelle said she paid $26 upfront using her CDC vouchers but was shocked when she was told the remaining balance was $126.
"Shocked but wanting the work done, I paid via PayLah!" she said. "After I received a receipt that said 'no refund', I left the shop.
"I went back to cancel and ask for a refund, but the owner refused, raised his voice, and would not return my payment."
The Stomper said she found the total charge of $152 for glueing two pairs of shoes excessive, particularly since the cost was not communicated beforehand.
"I've made a police report and was advised to lodge a complaint with the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case)," she added.
"Several online reviews allege that the shop overcharges customers and targets elderly people who may be less likely to question inflated prices."
She also shared some of the reviews she came across made by customer who also felt they had been overcharged.

Isabelle said she eventually retrieved her shoes as she did not want to proceed with the repairs.
"I believe public reporting could warn other consumers and prompt further investigation by consumer protection authorities," she said.
In response to a Stomp query, Mr Melvin Yong, president of Case said: "From Jan 1 to Nov 10, Case received two complaints against Sleek Services Enterprises.
"The complaints pertained to the pricing of repair services for damaged shoes and luggage wheels. CASE is assisting the affected consumers."
"Consumers who require assistance can contact Case at 6277 5100 or visit www.case.org.sg."
