A 23-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.

On Sept 17 at about 11.20pm, the police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit at Punggol Field, where the unit's main gate was splashed with an unknown liquid substance.

Through follow-up investigation and with the aid of police camera images, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him the next day.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he had responded to a job advertisement on Telegram to harass a debtor.

The man will be charged in court on Sept 19 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, up to five years' jail, and caning of up to six strokes.

The police said they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities and those who vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are also advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. Anyone with information about loansharking activities can call the police at 999.
