Student says 'something very wrong' that fish soup at Nanyang Poly canteen costs $4.50
A student was baffled to be charged $4.50 for what she felt was a measly portion of fish soup at her school.
Stomper Lee visited Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP)'s North Canteen on May 22.
Sharing a photo of her untouched meal, she said: "Four slices of batang fish slices with some tofu and green vegetables at $4.50 is too expensive for students to afford. There should be lower prices for us.
"Getting fish soup outside is cheaper than eating in NYP. Something is very wrong.
"I sent feedback to the school but thought it would be good to highlight this on Stomp.
"I know the prices of everything are increasing, but from a student's point of view, some of us have no income and are dependent on our parents, and some are earning very little from working part-time."
Asked how much she thinks would be a reasonable price for her meal, Lee told Stomp: "$3.50."
However, the canteen operator hit back at Lee's feedback.
He told Stomp: "We have investigated and indeed there is a report of this incident to NYP. However, the diner failed to declare that she had asked to add extra ingredients, so the post is not accurate.
"The stall sells fish soup at only $3.20, and it is actually one of the cheapest you can find in Singapore.
"The diner had added tofu, which is $0.50 for two pieces or $1 for 4 pieces, but it still doesn't add up to $4.50.
"She has obviously omitted some facts, which is very damaging to NYP and unfair to my hardworking stallholders."
In response, the Stomper said: "Even so, $4.50 is still very expensive as you can see from the untouched bowl of soup."
