Students and alumni of the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) are being warned about a scam email claiming that tuition fees are overdue.

Stomper Ryan shared with Stomp a screenshot of the email from one of his friends who is an SIM alumnus.

The email was sent on Oct 15 with the subject line "Final reminder - Missing payment for tuition fee", supposedly from SIM.

The message claimed an outstanding balance of $2,850 and urged the Stomper's friend to make payment via bank transfer to a POSB account under the name Singapore Institute of Management.

It also warned that if payment was not made by Oct 15, the matter would be referred to SIM's "litigation department".

The sender's email address, however, was account@sim-edu.live, a fake domain that does not belong to SIM.

"There seems to be a scam and possibly a data breach within SIM," said Ryan.

SIM confirmed in an Instagram post that the message was a scam.

In its post, the institution said: "Dear students and alumni, we've been alerted to a scam email circulating among SIM students and alumni, claiming your tuition fees are overdue and providing a fake bank account for payment.

SIM clarified that the email was not sent by the school and reminded recipients not to make any payment or share personal details.

"All official SIM payment information is available only via SIMConnect or emails ending with @sim.edu.sg or @notice.sim.edu.sg," it added.

SIM advised those who received the scam email - or who may have made a payment - to stop engaging with the sender, report the incident immediately to SIM Student Services, and contact their bank.
