A resident was rudely awakened by the smell of something burning in the wee hours of April 10.

Stomper Hsu, a resident at Block 654C Jurong West Street 61, shared that she realised someone was burning joss paper at 1.46am.

"I want to complain about this," the Stomper said.

"I don't know who is burning at this time.

"This is sleeping time, should not be burning."

She also called for stricter enforcement regarding the burning of joss paper in residential areas.

In an advisory jointly issued by the Religious Federations and the Alliance for Action (AfA) on joss paper burning practices, devotees are encouraged to use designated burners and to burn offerings in small quantities to reduce smoke emissions.

The advisory also urges devotees to avoid burning joss paper, incense sticks, or candles directly on the ground, grass patches, walkways, driveways, or near parked vehicles and buildings, as these practices pose fire hazards and can damage public property.

However, the guidelines do not specify any restrictions on the time of day when joss paper burning should take place.
