A long piece of cornice fell from the ceiling onto a sleeping girl at Hougang Street 91 at 2am on June 24.

Stomper Tay said her 17-year-old daughter was hit in the hand.

"A piece of wood attached to the ceiling and wall dropped," recounted Tay.

"We thought that part of the ceiling was bricks."

The cornice was directly over the girl's bed.

"Her hand was hit by it, but there was no serious injury, just a bit of pain," said the mother. "Luckily, it did not fall on her head and body."

The Stomper reminded others to be wary of such danger.

"Home owners should be aware when they plan to design their homes," said Tay.

"I believe this flat was built over 25 years ago, and we did no maintenance work."

This incident follows just days after an elderly man was struck on the head by pieces of concrete falling from his toilet ceiling.

According to the Housing Board (HDB), it is the responsibility of owners to maintain their flats' interior which includes the fixtures and fittings installed.

Residents can engage private contractors for home maintenance.
