A man spotted a large python during his morning walk along Whampoa River on Jan 18.

Stomper Madel said he saw the snake at about 7.19am and noted that it appeared to be slowly making its way towards the canal.

He did not alert any authorities after the encounter.

"It was my first time seeing a snake outside a zoo. It was both cool and terrifying because I know it can kill," Madel said, adding that the python appeared well-fed.

According to the National Parks Board (NParks), members of the public who encounter snakes should remain calm and avoid alarming the animal.

"These animals are shy and will not attack humans unless provoked or cornered. Sudden movements may alarm the snake and cause it to attack in self-defence," NParks advised.

The public is reminded not to touch, chase or corner snakes, and to keep a safe distance, especially when the animal is in its natural habitat.

NParks also urged pet owners to keep their pets on a tight leash, as pets may chase and frighten the snake, potentially putting both themselves and others at risk.

Anyone who is bitten by a snake should seek medical attention immediately.
