Elderly pedestrians worry for safety each time they walk past 'bicycle dumping ground' in Geylang
Disorderly parking of bicycles outside a hawker centre in Geylang has sparked safety concerns and unhappiness among the public.
Stomper Pang said Geylang East Market & Food Centre, located at Block 117 Aljunied Avenue 2, has become a "dumping ground" for bicycles.
He shared photos showing numerous bicycles obstructing the walkway and said: "Many residents just park in a disorderly manner due to a lack of proper markings or proper parking space.
"This has inadvertently caused many residents to worry for their safety every time they have to walk past the bicycles."
Pang noted that many of these residents are elderly, adding: "The walkway is the only access to the market. It is very untidy.
"I hope Stomp can help to share this. Many of us are unhappy as no one has bothered to take action."
Pang's complaint is one of many, as other Stompers have reported similar issues near Lakeside MRT station and along Sembawang Park Alley earlier this month.
In response to a Stomp query, a spokesman for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights Town Council said it is aware of the situation, and has observed that the issue tends to worsen during peak periods such as mornings, lunch hours and evenings.
The spokesman added: "To address this, we have put up educational materials in the area to remind cyclists to park the shared bicycles in an orderly manner and within the designated bicycle parking areas, marked by yellow boxes.
"In addition, we carry out regular housekeeping to keep common areas safe and free of obstructions.
"We will continue to monitor the situation closely to maintain a safe and pleasant environment for our residents."
