Bicycles protected by sheltered walkway, but people forced to walk in rain at Lakeside MRT station

Bicycles are being parked right in front of no-parking signs near Lakeside MRT station.

Stomper Chen shared his gripes about the "ridiculous" number of bicycles obstructing the sheltered walkway.

"It is especially ironic on rainy days when the bicycles remain sheltered while pedestrians have to walk in the rain," he said.

According to Chen, there are multiple bicycle parking zones near the station but they are often very crowded.

He believes past measures taken by authorities are unsustainable and have not been able to solve the issue.

Recalling enforcement action a few years back, he said: "A team actually came to 'lock up' the bicycles with wheel clamps and the owners had to go back to claim their bicycles.

"This really worked as the number of bicycles dropped drastically. Cyclists must have felt the pain of going to get their bicycles unlocked.

"However, it was painful and resource-draining for the authorities as well as hard to sustain.

"Subsequently, the operation died a natural death and we are back to square one."

Chen also saw security officers standing around the area to prevent cyclists from parking, but found this impractical too.

"Sometimes, 'no parking' notices would be stuck on the bicycles, but since there was no penalty, riders simply ignored the notices. It's a waste of resources.

"Another time, someone manually moved all the bicycles into the open field as revenge and the parking did dwindle slightly, but again it was unsustainable.

"Recently, large banners stating that actions will be taken against illegally parked bicycles appeared, but I have not seen anything happening yet."

Stomp reported a similar situation involving indiscriminate bicycle parking near Sembawang MRT station recently. The Land Transport Authority said it was monitoring the situation.

However, Anonymous feels that the problem is a worldwide issue in need of a universal solution.

He told Stomp: "I think any long-term solution must be sustainable or even self-sustaining, like a mindset change."
