SMRT bus captain who sheltered mum and baby from rain reminds us why small acts of kindness matter
When heavy rain poured outside Suntec City, a SMRT bus captain did not hesitate to step off his bus to lend a helping hand.
Holding an umbrella, Zhang Hou Chao, 43, shielded a mother and her baby from the rain, even carrying their stroller on board to ensure they got on safely.
The full-time bus captain's simple act of kindness on Sept 11 was caught by a Stomper and quickly drew praise online.
Recalling the moment, Mr Zhang shared with Stomp that he saw the mother struggling in the downpour - one hand holding her baby while the other gripped the stroller.
"The rain was heavy and the bus stop wasn't fully sheltered," he recounted, adding that he "just wanted to help the mother and baby quickly, so they could safely get on the bus without getting wet".
Mr Zhang shared that in bad weather or special circumstances, especially when passengers have young children or special needs, he instinctively goes the extra mile to ensure their safety and comfort.
On Oct 24, we presented the bus captain with a Stomp Goody Bag.
"I am truly surprised and honored," he said. "This really gives me a lot of motivation and reminds me that even a small act during my job can bring warmth to my passengers."
Although Mr Zhang has been driving with SMRT for only a year and a half, he finds his job extremely rewarding.
"Every day, I look forward to the interactions I have with my passengers," he shared.
Simple gestures he has received, like "thank you" or "goodbye", all serve as reminders of why he enjoys his work and the meaningful impact that small acts of kindness can have.
Mr Zhang explained that situations like this can happen every day.
Reflecting on his role as a bus driver, he said: "Simple acts of kindness come from being proactive and attentive. Sometimes it's as simple as holding an umbrella or just being there to offer support."
"If it's within our means, we should always try to do our best and help whenever possible.
"Even small gestures can brighten a passenger's day."
