Commuters have reported receiving letters of encouragement on the MRT, apparently from a man who slips the notes to passengers before alighting.

Redditor Unfair-Bike posted a photo of a note on the Singapore Subreddit, showing a red packet with a letter that read: “You are doing good enough, even at times it doesn’t feel that way. Be grateful & enjoy the day!”

In the caption, the Redditor said they received the note when the train stopped at Marsiling MRT station.

A man, described as being in his 50s, had apparently “dropped” the red packet on the Redditor’s lap and given similar notes to a few other passengers, before alighting at Woodlands station.

“Really caught me by surprise, it’s nice to see something wholesome on a mundane train ride,” the user said.

The post received over 1,700 upvotes, as some netizens reported similar incidents of them receiving notes from a man on the train at Woodlands.

“This guy is quite well known around the Woodlands area, he does this quite often and has been doing it for a long time,” one netizen explained.

“In a world of sh*tty people and pure filth, it’s so refreshing to see this,” another offered.

Redditors report similar encounters

Redditors recounted similar experiences while on the North-South Line (NSL) in July 2025.

User AhBuiKia received a note on July 20, 2025 while travelling on the NSL towards Marina Bay station. Recounting the incident, he said a man had slipped the red packet in front of him before alighting.

The Redditor shared a photo of a note, which was written on the back of a Singtel flyer. It featured a simple drawing of a smiley face with the words: “You epic warrior”.

“Keep loving yourself regardless you achieve or fail, gain or loss etc,” the note read. “You’re diligent, kind, humble, brave!”

“We also realised that a boy sitting diagonally opposite us was given a red packet too. Anyone experienced this before?” the user asked.

Another netizen reported receiving one with the same drawing while studying at Woodlands Library, while another said they received one at Woodlands MRT station.

Most netizens commended the “heartwarming” and “kind” gesture, while several expressed suspicion.

“Somehow I think the uncle might have some issues but it’s great that he is spreading positivity and encouragement to others. We never realize how strong or hurtful words to strangers can be,” one user commented.
