Woman’s $60 takeaway allegedly stolen by auntie at supermarket, trails suspect to MRT station
A woman nearly lost her pricey takeaway meal to a stranger who allegedly swiped it while she was shopping at a supermarket at Woodleigh.
In a TikTok video shared on March 30, user @b.linling said she was shopping at the supermarket when she noticed that her $60 takeaway claypot chicken stew was missing. She said a member of the supermarket staff told her that a woman in red had taken the plastic bag.
“Just as I had given up on my meal and was on the way to lodge a police report, I saw an auntie in a red T-shirt who fit the staff’s description,” said b.linling.
While trailing the auntie to Woodleigh MRT station, b.linling wondered how she was going to prove the auntie had stolen her takeaway, even considering whether she might recognise the dish by its aroma.
b.linling added that the woman started getting evasive and went around in circles, after realising she was being followed.
With a “10 per cent doubt” that she may have got the wrong person, b.linling was also worried that she might appear like a stalker.
As the train was arriving, b.linling said she noticed the auntie leaving a package on a seat at the MRT platform, which turned out to be her missing chicken takeaway.
“Hello, stop there. I saw you. You know I’m following you, right?” she shouted after the woman, confronting her over the alleged theft.
The woman denied this, insisting that b.linling had got the wrong person before boarding the train.
Caught between going after the woman and retrieving her chicken dish, b.linling eventually decided that saving her dinner was the wiser choice.
Netizens apologise for woman’s experience
B.linling’s video has since garnered more than 200,000 views, 5,600 reactions, and 200 comments.
Netizens thought the TikToker was very brave to have confronted the auntie.
“Brave, young lady!” said a TikToker in Chinese. But the original poster said she was only going for the chicken.
Several TikTokers apologised for b.linling’s experience, with some saying the auntie’s actions were not representative of Singaporeans.
“I’m so sorry, I never expected this to happen in Singapore.” said a TikToker. “Low crime doesn’t mean no crime! Especially nowadays, the economy is not good! Always be vigilant, alert and attentive regardless where you are!” another advised.
Some urged her not to consume the food, believing the auntie could have contaminated it.
“Better not eat it, maybe put something in,” said an Instagram user. But b.lining said she had checked that the food was fine.
Some saw the funny side of the episode, though.
“Omg I want to try that chicken!” said an Instagram user.
