Woman complains of queue cutting at Superga giveaway, others accuse her of jumping the queue
A video of what appears to be a queue-cutting incident in a shoe giveaway at Superga ION Orchard has gone viral, with netizens reacting with a mix of horror and amusement.
According to Joanne Tan, the incident took place at a Superga Open Event where "the first 10 people (to arrive at the store, presumably) are rewarded with free shoes".
The video, titled, "Blatant Cut Queue on SuperGa Open Event", starts with a group of people walking down an escalator which is not in operation. Ms Tan is in fourth place but manages to overtake a woman in front of her to be third in line at the Superga store's entrance.
However, two women move into the space between the first and second in line, relegating her to fifth. The woman who is now third in line then beckons those behind to join her at the front, and by the end of the minute-long video, Ms Tan appears to be in 10th place.
It is unclear when the incident happened, though the video was shared on multiple accounts across social media platforms on Sept 24, all of which credited Ms Tan, as well as Reddit.
The video shared on Facebook page Singapore Incidents alone had garnered 130,000 views, 451 reactions and 226 comments at press time.
Superga staff did not intervene
Ms Tan said in the caption that bigger groups who knew one another allowed their friends to join the queue ahead of those who had arrived before them. She added that the video was shown to Superga staff, who said "there was nothing they could do".
Several TikTok users were outraged by the queue-cutting. "WHY ARE YOU LETTING THEM???" said one.
"Actually they do not look like they are in need of shoes. More like trying to get free stuff to resell or to have a sense of achievement," said a Redditor.
"So this is how those carousell buyers who bargain with you for 1 cent look like. Disgusting sia," said another Redditor.
"Wow steady 1 person chop for the entire family queue," said a Facebook user.
"You can be second in the queue and still not get a free gift cos the first one chop for whole village!" said one netizen, also on Facebook.
There were also comments such as "siasuey" (disgraceful in Hokkien), "not paiseh" (shameless) and multiple laughing emoji comments from those who sympathised with Ms Tan.
They were there the night before
Allan Yu, who was among those in the queue, told The New Paper that they had started lining up from 8pm the previous day but were chased out by security and had to wait outside the mall overnight.
"The one who took the video only came at 8am in the morning - she came last minute and wanted to cut," he said.
Other commenters also suggested that the people in the video were simply lining up according to the order established outside the mall before the doors opened.
One TikToker said: "Outside mall already got queue but they rush in to cut queue so in the end they stand back in original order as they were outside the mall. please post the full context."
Another TikToker added: "I saw a comment saying person recording is the one tryna cut queue, everyone else was lining up according to the order they were queuing up outside the mall."
But some questioned the legitimacy of the queue outside the mall.
"Queue outside mall is for mall entrance not the shop. So why must also apply when queueing for the shop?" said one TikToker, who added that they could start queuing at home if the order at the mall's entrance was recognised.
