'Who's at fault?': Woman crossing on red light hit by car that sped up on green
A woman was hit by a car on Boon Lay Way after crossing the road while the pedestrian light was red.
The 45-second dashcam clip, which circulated online, showed that the incident occurred on Oct 28 at 1.36 pm. The traffic lights were in favour of the driver, but the woman, holding an umbrella, continued crossing the road.
Although the dashcam driver slowed down and honked to warn her, another vehicle accelerated and struck her. The driver was later seen getting out of the car to help her. The dashcam driver also alighted.
The video, posted by Roads.sg on Facebook on Oct 31, has since drawn more than 1,900 reactions and 700 comments at press time.
'This case shall be 50/50?': Netizens divided
According to the Traffic Police, individuals who fail to comply with red lights at a pedestrian crossing can be fined $50.
However, a CNA report said a portion of the liability is still assigned to the driver, as drivers have a duty of care to other road users.
"Crossing on red and walking like strolling in the park, still using an umbrella and blocking her own view of oncoming traffic," one commenter wrote.
While many agreed that the woman was in the wrong, others blamed the driver for accelerating too quickly.
"The driver had accelerated hard on green light. Whats the rush?" a netizen wrote, adding: "Though the pedestrian is at fault. But she felt a lot more impact due to the hard acceleration."
Another said: "Right of way doesn't give you the right to run over a pedestrian that is still crossing."
"Regardless whether the driver has the right of way or not, all drivers must be alert to watch out for vulnerable road users," added a user.
Despite the debate over who was at fault, many commenters wished the woman a quick recovery.
