In its Facebook post after 9am on April 23 April, SMRT explained that a track point failure occurred between Pasir Ris and Tampines stations on the East-West Line at around 6.20am.

"A point machine helps control train movements at rail junctions when trains switch tracks. It must work properly to ensure the safe operation of trains. Safety is always our top priority."

To support commuters, shuttle train services were provided between Pasir Ris and Tampines, with about 10 minutes of extra travel time. Free regular bus services were also made available between the two stations.

Train services on the rest of the East-West Line continued to run as usual in both directions.

Train service progressively returned to normal.
