'Spoilt' tourist criticised for complaining about 'Stone-Age' hotel in S'pore that allegedly did not provide adaptor
A netizen, presumably a tourist from the Philippines, has come under fire for criticising a hotel in Singapore for allegedly not providing a travel adaptor for their guests.
Facebook user Wilson Ng shared a photo of a three-pin socket on Feb 4, saying he noticed all the sockets in the hotel were of the same type.
"Most hotels offer American plugs (at least one) and many of them even [sic] USB ports," Mr Ng wrote in the post.
He added that he had stopped bringing adaptors on his travels since he had "been to hundreds" of hotels over the past 15 years and "never had this problem".
Mr Ng said he contacted the front desk but alleged that staff members did not accede to his request, suggesting that he purchase an adaptor from a convenience store instead.
"This hotel is stuck in the Stone Age and will lose a lot of customers simply because they don't adapt," he remarked.
In the comments, Mr Ng added that the accommodation was located near Orchard Road, but did not state which particular hotel it was.
Mr Ng clarified in a follow-up post on Feb 7 that there was "no malice" intended in his earlier post, and that he was only providing feedback "as a businessman".
Stomp has reached out to Mr Ng for comment.
Netizens slam tourist for 'whining on social media'
The original post quickly gained traction, garnering over 600 reactions and 800 comments.
Many netizens suggested that he should have brought an adaptor.
"Don't expect any country to cater to you specifically just because you're whining on social media and behaving like a spoilt tourist," one netizen commented. Another remarked that he could consider opting for a higher-end hotel next time.
"Singapore is a major transit hub, so many hotels assume frequent travellers bring universal adaptors," another explained.
"15 years of travel and you've still not managed to buy a universal travel adaptor?" one user asked.
When a netizen offered an explanation on why Singapore uses three-pin plugs, Mr Ng responded that hotels should "think like an 'American' to earn dollars".
"You can say they failed to… adapt," one netizen joked.
