Song and dance by two women in Chinatown as elderly man dances along: 'Got permit or not?'
A video of two women performing a song and dance in Chinatown has received plaudits from some netizens who say they add to the festive cheer, while others label them a nuisance and question if they have an entertainment license.
Facebook user @Sheryle O Oro posted the video on Feb 2, declaring that one of the women was "a multi talent, designer, singer and (choreographer) dancer."
The two women can be seen performing in the open space in front of Casanova — an adult shop which lists its address as 84 Pagoda Street — while an elderly man sways along to the music behind them.
Netizens were amused by the man's "octopus dance", though it's unclear if he was part of the act or strayed into the frame.
The post has garnered at least 93,000 views, 368 reactions, and 145 comments.
'Got permit or not?'
"Making Chinatown very (lively) Chinatown, good for business around," said a Facebook user.
"No chance to perform on stage or 7th Lunar month, this is the only opportunity for these people," commented another.
But not everyone was enthusiastic. "The authorities should do something about it. It's public nuisance," commented a netizen.
"Got permit or not?" asked another.
Others felt the performers should be given leeway. "Wow, it's beautiful, it's fun to watch, sisters, just enjoy dancing," said one.
Chinatown appears to have become an informal performance venue, riling some in the process.
Last December, shop owners complained about a group of elderly singers that brings their own speaker and projector to belt out their favourite hits.
As far back as July 2023, a shop employee confronted the group, leading to a brief altercation where police intervened.
