A TikToker attempting to travel the world without spending money had a heartwarming encounter with a group of elderly patrons at Maxwell Food Centre after asking if he could share their rojak.

TikTok user @__yihui, who went viral in February for hitchhiking from Singapore to Krabi with the help of strangers, is now aiming to reach Peru without spending a dollar — starting by selling cookies to passers-by to fund his flight.

As part of his challenge, he approached a group of elderly diners and politely asked if he could have a portion of their shared plate of rojak.

One of them offered him a piece and invited him to sit down with them, even buying him a drink.

When asked why he was doing this, he explained that he was trying to travel the world without spending money.

The group later gave him $2 each, saying that they wanted to “help him out”.

They went on to engage in a lively conversation over the shared meal, with the elderly folk encouraging the TikToker to eat more. One of them even broke into song.

“Some Singaporeans can be quite reserved,” said yihui, responding to a woman who remarked: “Luckily you dared to ask.”

“Always remember, there’s always good people around,” one told him, as another urged him not to forget them.

They part ways after taking a photo together, with the TikToker thanking them profusely.

‘Faith in humanity restored’

The post, shared on April 1, garnered more than 128,500 views, with netizens gushing over the group’s warm hospitality and generosity.

“Aww so cute,” said one.

“Immediately sat you down like family,” another wrote, while one described their actions as “kind and sweet”.

One user commended the elderly for “making sure youngsters don’t go hungry”, while another concluded: “Faith in humanity restored.”
