The public is warned against purchasing or consuming a health supplement named Setia Herba, which claims to alleviate joint pain and gout.

Its packaging states that it contains authentic herbs and is safe to consume. But tests found that it contains two potent steroids - dexamethasone and prednisolone - and an anti-inflammatory painkiller, diclofenac, said the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on April 2.

These substances should be taken only under strict medical supervision, added the authority.

Long-term unsupervised use of steroids can increase blood sugar levels and lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, bone disorders, an increased risk of infections and Cushing's syndrome (where one has a round or "moon face" appearance and upper body obesity with thin limbs).

Conversely, if one stops taking steroids without proper medical supervision, it may lead to withdrawal effects that might cause fatigue, low blood pressure, fits, or muscle and joint pain, HSA added.

In addition, consuming diclofenac may cause serious gastric bleeding, as well as a heart attack or stroke if it is used for a prolonged period.

Setia Herba was marketed with a laboratory test certificate to trick consumers into believing the product had been tested and was found to be safe for consumption, said HSA.

It was sold on e-commerce sites such as Carousell, Lazada and Shopee, said HSA, which added that it has worked with the platforms to remove listings of the product.

See doc at once if you have consumed Setia Herba

The public is advised to steer clear of products from unknown sources, especially those sold online, and purchase from only reputable pharmacies and well-known retailers. Those who have consumed Setia Herba should not stop taking it suddenly, as they may experience withdrawal symptoms, said HSA. Instead, they should see a doctor immediately.

HSA warned all sellers and suppliers against selling the product, adding that it will not hesitate to take stern enforcement action against those who sell products adulterated with potent ingredients.

Those found guilty of doing so may be jailed for up to two years, fined up to $10,000, or both.

Those who have information on the sale and supply of illegal products are encouraged to contact HSA's enforcement branch on 6866-3485 during office hours from Monday to Friday, or via e-mail at hsa_is@hsa.gov.sg
