A motorcycle burst into flames in Kallang on March 7, in what was the fifth vehicle fire reported in less than a week.

A photo uploaded on social media shows the vehicle ablaze at the junction of Crawford Street and North Bridge Road, with thick plumes of smoke emerging from it.

In response to queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the incident at about 3.10pm.

The fire was extinguished using a hose reel and a compressed air foam backpack.

There were no injuries, SCDF said, adding that it was investigating the cause.

This latest vehicle fire is the fifth one reported within the week. It comes after two such cases were reported on March 6 – one involving a bus on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and another involving a car in Tampines Street 31.

SCDF’s 2024 emergency medical services and enforcement statistics showed that vehicle fires account for the largest share of fires at non-building premises.

Of the 607 emergency calls received for such incidents, 220 were related to vehicle fires.

The primary causes of vehicle fires were ignition sources, such as overheating and electrical faults within the engine compartment.
