A monitor lizard was spotted crossing a bridge at Ulu Pandan Park Connector, leaving pedestrians stranded and watching.

A clip posted to the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group by user Annie Wong showed five pedestrians trailing a monitor lizard as it slowly zigzagged across the middle of a bridge.

The onlookers paused, lifting their phones to record the unusual sight.

While waiting for the lizard to pass, a woman in a pink top and black shorts pointed out that the bridge was likely too high for the lizard to safely reach the canal below.

According to Ms Wong, the incident happened at the Ulu Pandan Park Connector network. The area hosts a diversity of wildlife and runs between Commonwealth Avenue West and Bukit Batok East Avenue 2.

"Can siam, siam"

Many concerned netizens urged others not to go near monitor lizards.

"Their bite won't rip your limbs... but if kena infection is [sic] very troublesome. Their claws or tail whip also," one netizen commented. "Can siam, siam la... no need hero."

"Since there is no alternative place for this one to go, it's best not to pass. The fella might feel cornered and react," another user advised.

"No need to go work or exercise. Take leave & tell boss got dangerous Dino obstructing my pathway," one commenter joked.

Public advised to keep safe distance from monitor lizards

Though monitor lizards come off as intimidating due to their large size, they are generally shy and stay away from humans.

The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) warns against touching, chasing, or cornering monitor lizards. Instead, members of the public are advised to keep a safe distance and observe from afar.

Though monitor lizard bites are not fatal to humans, they can cause bacterial infections. Those who have been bitten are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
