Massive 250kg WWII bomb found at Changi Airport construction site, to be detonated on-site
A 250kg World War II aerial bomb has been discovered at a construction site along Tanah Merah Coast Road during works.
According to The Straits Times, the site appears to be part of the future Changi Airport Terminal 5 development.
Police said they were alerted to the war relic at about 4.55am on March 31. The discovery has prompted a planned disposal operation by military experts.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assessed the object to be a 250kg WWII aerial bomb that is unsafe to move.
Controlled disposal to take place early morning
As a result, the EOD team will carry out an on-site controlled disposal on April 2 between 2.30am and 4.30am.
The operation will be contained within the construction site, and areas accessible to the public will not be affected, police said.
However, loud sounds can be expected during the disposal, and members of the public are advised not to be alarmed.
A map provided by the police shows the site located between two runways, and is near landmarks such as the Changi Jurassic Mile and Tanah Merah Country Club.
Authorities said they are working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Changi Airport Group, SAF and the Singapore Civil Defence Force to ensure the disposal is carried out safely.
Members of the public with enquiries can contact the Changi Neighbourhood Police Centre at 1800-587-2999.
The unexploded bomb is believed to be among the heaviest found in Singapore in recent years.
In September 2023, a 100kg WWII bomb found in Upper Bukit Timah triggered a large-scale evacuation exercise. Its detonation also caused some damage to nearby units, with residents reporting ceiling cracks and shattered glass.
