Man nabbed for loanshark harassment: Jurong West unit splashed with red paint, had debtor's note

A 49-year-old man was arrested on Dec 8 for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment at a Jurong West Street 64 residential unit.

The police said they were alerted to the case on Dec 7 at about 6.30pm, in which the unit's main gate was secured with a bicycle lock and splashed with red paint. A debtor's note was also placed on the gate.

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to be involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment islandwide.

The man will be charged in court on Dec 10 under the Moneylenders Act 2008.

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes.

The police said they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities.

"Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance and disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law," they added.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. Call '999' if you suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
