The police have arrested a man for allegedly burning the dwellings of community cats in Bukit Batok.

Police were alerted to a fire at Block 263 Bukit Batok East Avenue 4 at 1.50am on Nov 19. The dwellings are boxes, typically made of cardboard, constructed by volunteers as shelters for community cats.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that a 67-year-old man had allegedly set fire to cat dwellings. He was subsequently arrested for mischief by fire. No injuries were reported. Police investigations are ongoing," said a police spokesperson.

The incident was shared on the Facebook group Sayang Our Community Cats by Deon Lee on Nov 19. The man also set fire to another cat dwelling at 5.30am the following, said Ms Lee.

"He did it again this morning at 0530am! This time round was another cat's house which is near to the one yesterday!" she wrote.

Ms Lee, who started feeding the cats in May, told Stomp she was angry and sad, and also worried about the felines. "It's just that they are quite traumatised," she said, expressing relief that the three community cats at Block 263 were unharmed.

Her post had drawn 687 reactions and 154 comments at press time. Most were outraged by what had happened.

"Crazy or what. How can they do such things," said a netizen.

"I hope whoever did this will have his/her own home burned down," said another.
