Man, 63, breaks into Clementi shop and takes $1,400 arowana that was later found dead
A 63-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of housebreaking.
The police said in a news release that they were alerted to the case at a shop located at Block 328 Clementi Avenue 2 on March 17 at about 2.30am.
Mohamed Ayub Bin Ibrahim had allegedly damaged the rear gate of Local Fish Shop (LSF) and gained unlawful entry into the premises.
A red arowana fish, valued at about $1,400, was reported missing.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of police cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division identified the man and arrested him within 13 hours of the report.
The fish was subsequently recovered but was found to be dead.
According to court documents, Mohamed Ayub was charged in court on March 18 with housebreaking in order to commit theft.
If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
The police advise property owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
- Secure all doors, roller shutters, windows and other openings with good quality grilles and padlocks when leaving your premises unattended, even for a short while;
- Refrain from keeping large sums of cash and valuables in your premises; and
- Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor lights and/or CCTVs to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and are in good working condition.
