Maid kicks, throws 80-year-old employer with dementia to floor after drunken row with boyfriend
A domestic helper who had been drinking while arguing with her boyfriend over the phone later took out her anger on her 80-year-old employer, who has dementia.
The maid kicked a chair beside the elderly woman, kicked her in the back and eventually grabbed her by the shoulders and threw her to the floor.
The 32-year-old Myanmar national, Vei Nei Chong (transliterated), was sentenced to 17 weeks’ jail on Aug 24 after pleading guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a vulnerable person.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident happened at about 9.10pm on July 28 at a seventh-floor unit at Block 123 Bukit Merah View.
The victim, who has dementia and requires assistance with her daily activities, was living with Chong at the time.
According to court proceedings, Chong had been drinking two cans of beer while arguing with her boyfriend over the phone between 8pm and 9pm that evening.
After becoming intoxicated, she shouted at her employer, who was lying on her bed with her eyes closed, at about 9.11pm.
She also kicked a chair beside the elderly woman, causing it to hit the bed frame. Subsequently, she continued to shout and repeatedly kick the chair.
She later picked up a metal walking frame, held it above the elderly woman’s head before throwing it towards the other end of the room.
Fearing for her safety, the woman tried to leave the flat. However, Chong pushed her back inside and closed the door.
Chong then kicked her in the back.
When the elderly woman tried to open the door again, Chong grabbed her by the shoulders and threw her to the floor.
The force of the fall caused her head to hit against the area behind the bed, leaving her motionless on the floor.
A neighbour heard loud noises coming from the unit and called the police.
Elderly woman hospitalised for 15 days
After police officers arrived at the scene, the elderly woman was taken to Singapore General Hospital.
She suffered cuts to her left elbow and left foot, as well as bruising above her left eyebrow and on her scalp.
She was hospitalised for 15 days.
The prosecution said the victim was unable to care for herself because of her dementia and was particularly vulnerable and unable to protect herself.
It also highlighted CCTV footage showing Chong throw her employer to the floor.
The court heard that the act could have resulted in serious injuries, as the woman’s head could have struck the bed frame or wall.
The prosecution said Chong had abused the trust placed in her as the elderly woman’s caregiver and called for at least 17 weeks’ jail.
The judge ultimately sentenced Chong to 17 weeks’ imprisonment.
