A viral TikTok video of two Caucasian men in close attendance as a romp of otters rolls on a grass patch has drawn varied reactions from netizens.

While many found the animals "cute" and "adorable", others warned that the men were too close to the otters, who could turn aggressive if they felt threatened.

Captioned, "Otters along Bendemeer Road", the video, which was posted last week by touchinggrassinsg, had 210,000 views, 8,616 reactions and 328 comments at press time.

One of the men can be seen taking shots of the otters with a professional camera while the other stands with arms folded, observing the animals as they groom their fur. A third man, likely a local, is seen briefly at the start filming the otters with his mobile phone.

Several netizens remarked that the otters were huge and well-fed, with some believing that the 11-second reel was AI-generated. Other comments were of the cheeky variety.

"Wow, so big already.... when taking PSLE?" asked a netizen.

"They are gradually getting used to humans. Soon may climb your lap for a pat," said another.

"What kind of cats are those?" asked a user in jest.

Some teased the men: "Angmo stare only, don't want to help scratch."

Others found the otters cute but warned: "Adorable. But I will keep a safe distance. Otter got sharp teeth."

Not everyone is an otter fan

"These squirmy otters scare the hell out of me, especially their tails," said a commenter.

Citing public safety and calling on the authorities to act, one even said: "Such huge sizes of them should be put to sleep as public safety comes first."

The comment drew 50 replies, with most disagreeing. "I think you should be put to sleep," said one.

"If putting down every nuisance was policy, you'd be first in line," said another.

"What public safety?" commented yet another. "The earth doesn't belong to humans only. The animals also belong to the earth."

The more measured replies explained the importance of the otters.

"Otters are important to Singapore 's ecology and their thriving is a sign of healthy ecology in Singapore," said a commenter. They added: "If anyone causes harm to otters, he can face fines and/or imprisonment, because otters are a protected species under the Wildlife Act."
