Insurance agent allegedly pocketed client’s premium payments, leaving her unable to claim $56k for medical bills
A 41-year-old insurance agent will be charged for allegedly defrauding his client.
On Sep 17, 2025, a woman lodged a police report at Bedok Police Division when she was unable to make a claim from her personal insurance policy for outstanding medical bills amounting to $56,444.51.
This was despite making premium payments to her insurance agent, said the police in a news release on April 7.
Following investigations, police officers discovered that the victim’s insurance agent had allegedly failed to secure a personal insurance policy for her.
Instead, he allegedly placed his client under a corporate hospital plan without her knowledge, even though his client was not employed by the corporate company. He then allegedly pocketed the premium payments she made.
As a result, the insurance company did not honour the claim submitted by the victim.
The man will be charged on April 8 for criminal breach of trust as an agent. This offence carries a fine and a jail term of up to 20 years.
The police said they take a serious view of such offences and will not hesitate to take action against those who abuse their positions of trust to defraud members of the public.
Members of the public are reminded to verify their insurance policies directly with their insurance companies and report suspicious activities to the police.
