Dead pangolin spotted on road along Mandai-Yishun route: 'Heartbreaking'

The sight of a dead pangolin, spotted on the road from Mandai towards Yishun, has saddened netizens and sparked concern for wildlife in the area.

Photos of the scaly-skinned creature, posted in the Facebook group Singapore Wildlife Sightings by user @Jason Chua, show the brown-and-beige pangolin flattened on a wet road.

The Sunda pangolin is listed as "critically endangered" in the Singapore Red Data Book 2024, which details the conservation statuses of threatened plant and animal species in the country.

According to an NParks advisory, pangolins face the greatest threat from roadkill in Singapore, as the slow-moving animals are often killed or injured by vehicles when they stray from forested areas.

Under the Wildlife Act, it is also illegal to kill, trap, take or keep wild animals, including pangolins.

In the comments on the Facebook post, netizens described the sight as "heartbreaking" and "sad".

One netizen reported seeing the same roadkill, while others urged Mr Chua to report the sighting to authorities

"None will be left day by day as they clear more forests," another netizen lamented.
