HDB resident allegedly finds cigarette butts in his plant pot, suspects it’s his neighbour’s doing
A resident was left disheartened after discovering cigarette butts, allegedly discarded by his neighbour, in one of the plant pots lining the corridor area outside his unit.
In a TikTok video shared on March 30, user @thejeremiahsu said he was pruning his plants along the Housing & Development Board (HDB) corridor when he found cigarette butts in one of his plant pots. Apart from cigarette butts, thejeremiahsu told Stomp that he also found ash and a toothpick floss stick in the same pot.
He added that this was his first time encountering such a situation and speculated that it was one of his neighbours’ doing.
However, he ruled out his immediate neighbour, claiming they do not smoke and that they were fond of his plants: “My immediate neighbour actually likes my plants and donated their side of the corridor for me to put plants. They say it’s a mini Gardens by the Bay.”
Instead, he suspects the waste may have been left behind by one of his upstairs neighbours.
Despite the rude surprise, thejeremiahsu said he does not plan to bear grudges. “Funny stuff like this can happen. What are you going to do? Roll with the punches or forgive and forget?” he said.
“Life gives you lemons, make lemonade and become a millionaire lemonade empire,” he added.
Netizens divided on issue
Thejeremiahsu’s TikTok video has since garnered more than 100,000 views, 2,000 likes, and 400 comments.
Some netizens found the whole situation ironic, arguing that his garden was too extensive and encroached on public space.
“‘We live in a shared space....’ and proceeds to put his planters all over the corridor,” said a Reddit user.
“Sorry, I also do gardening but if you are planting in areas other than your immediate corridor area, you don’t have the right to complain,” said another Redditor, “Keep to your space then you have a better argument.”
Thejeremiahsu, however, argued that he only has a single row of plants hugging the corridor wall, adding that there was “sufficient space”. He even claimed that there was enough space for him to breakdance along the section of the corridor.
Others praised his calmness and his beautiful garden.
“Awww bless your soul! It looks beautiful! Put a plant on their floor as a gift and tell them it’s from you,” said an Instagram user.
Another Instagram user said, “Cheers to Lemonade!!” to which thejeremiahsu replied joyfully with “yessssssss lemonadeeeeeeee!”
