‘This generation of kids are doomed’: Video of boy playing with fire extinguisher upsets netizens
A video of a boy playing with a fire extinguisher has drawn criticism from netizens, with some questioning the behaviour and discipline of today’s youth.
The clip, shared on Instagram page @sgfollowsall on Aug 23, shows the boy spraying the contents of a fire extinguisher into the air in a poorly lit sheltered space while another boy stands across from him.
After the boy is done, he places the extinguisher on the ground and walks away.
No context was provided in the video’s caption, and it is unclear where or when it was recorded.
The video has garnered more than 34,600 views and 446 reactions and was also shared on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page.
‘We have become too lenient’
Netizens were critical of the boy’s action.
“Teens of Singapore have no hope already, this country is doomed,” commented one.
“This generation of kids are just doomed AF. Especially primary school kids,” another said.
Some felt that children needed to be disciplined.
“We have become too lenient.. along with gentle parents who keep emphasising, ‘my kids are good boys at home’,” said a commenter.
Another suggested making the boys do community cleaning and fining their parents. "Let them sweep the roads, housing estate, and pick up trash in the parks. Then they will learn or else everything is fun, just get a warning," the Instagram user said.
A Facebook user similarly suggested: “Just bill the parents for the cleaning and replacement of the extinguisher lo.”
Others highlighted the potential danger of misusing firefighting equipment.
“In a real emergency, the extinguisher is kosong (empty). How to save lives and property?”
Another hoped that the person filming the incident had also reported it to the police.
Under the Fire Safety Act, a person may commit an offence if their actions cause, or are likely to cause, a fire safety measure to no longer be in proper working order. Where no specific penalty is provided, offenders may be fined up to $10,000, jailed for up to six months, or both.
