Foreign workers bust out dance moves at Pasir Ris Park barbecue: 'Spirit of Michael Jackson'

A group of men, believed to be foreign workers, were caught on camera busting out some serious dance moves at a barbecue in Pasir Ris Park on a Sunday, in a video that has since gone viral.

The 64-second clip, posted on Facebook page Singapore Incidents on Dec 14, shows five men dancing at what appears to be a company function at barbecue pit No 64.

Several others at the barbecue pit are seen watching and applauding the dancers as they took turns to show off their moves.

The video then pans to the barbecue pit, where several people are seen chatting and grilling food, with a child visible in the background.

The clip has since garnered more than 68,000 views, 840 reactions and 240 comments.

Netizens defend dance session

While most viewers appeared amused, one comment criticised the group for being noisy in a public park.

"Excuse me, this is at public park leh, keep the noise down… by the look drunken liao," said a Facebook user.

Others quickly came to the dancers' defence, saying the men were simply enjoying themselves and were not causing trouble.

"Let them destress... music is good... spread positivity bro," said one.

Another commented: "Having a blast and loving life, any problem? They are having good time and not causing any harm to anyone."

Some pointed out that the gathering appeared to be a company event, noting that others at the barbecue pit were supportive of the dancers.

"Looks like a company gathering, Chinese uncle also inside the group, BBQ there," said one.

Others expressed sympathy for foreign workers, saying they deserved time to unwind during their rest days.

"Good for them to release all the stress and tomorrow go back hard work again," said one.

Another said: "Family far away, long working hours, high-risk job. They deserve this happiness... those who don't like, you are not human."

"They deserved to be happy with their hard earned money!" added one.

One netizen offered a light-hearted note of caution: "Glad you guys are having fun on your off day... Just don't fight and do clear up afterwards. Other than that enjoy boys."

One even facetiously referenced a recent incident in Chinatown.

"Hello uncle, you sing, dance at Chinatown, disturbing the retail business owners, then OK?" said the Facebook user.

Amid the debate, one user decided to focus only on the performance, declaring: "Spirit of Michael Jackson!!"

In September, a similar debate surfaced after a spontaneous dance session by a group of foreign workers outside Paya Lebar MRT went viral on TikTok, drawing both criticism and support online.

At the time, Ms Dipa Swaminathan, founder of charity ItsRainingRaincoats, said migrant workers deserve the space to unwind. "Many of them earn a basic wage of $18 a day. They can't afford to go to a fancy pub and order a drink," she said.
