Filipino man loves Ya Kun so much, he got a tattoo of their logo: 'Give this guy citizenship now'
A Filipino expatriate loves Ya Kun Kaya Toast so much that he got a tattoo of the popular cafe chain's logo to mark the end of his three-year stint in Singapore.
30-year-old John Paul Penuliar's colleagues were so surprised that some even tried to rub the tattoo off his wrist, thinking it was invisible ink. "They were shocked and couldn't believe it," he told Stomp.
Mr Penuliar's Nov 30 Instagram clip, captioned "PH SG will miss Ya Kun's iced soya milk coffee" and featuring his friends' reactions to the tattoo, has since garnered more than 415,000 views, 8,200 reactions, and 188 comments as of press time.
"Go to Ya Kun shop and get your lifetime supply of treats," a commenter suggested, calling him a "walking billboard" for Ya Kun.
'Not my first, no regrets'
According to his LinkedIn Profile, Mr Penuliar is a senior manager at Procter & Gamble (P&G). He is also a content creator producing what he calls educational advocacy and TikTok Math content for Filipino students.
Now based in Manila, he told Stomp that he wanted something unique and "not too obvious(ly)" Singaporean to mark his time in the Republic.
Ya Kun was a convenient spot for breakfast and after-lunch coffee when he first moved to Singapore in 2022. "It was one of the first few places I got to know in Singapore when I moved here," recalled Mr Penuliar, who frequented Ya Kun up to three times a week.
He regularly visited the outlets in Buona Vista and One North, where his favourite drink was iced soya milk coffee. He also enjoyed the kaya butter and smoked cheese french toast sets.
Mr Penuliar said he is contemplating a trip to Singapore in two weeks, when he will, of course, visit Ya Kun.
