A flight had to be turned back to Changi Airport due to a passenger’s unruly behaviour.

The police were alerted to the incident involving the 63-year-old Australian man on March 19 at about 6.40am.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man, who was believed to be intoxicated, began shouting profanities and throwing his shoes about 20 minutes after the aircraft departed from Changi Airport,” the police said in a news release.

“Despite attempts by cabin crew to calm him down, the man purportedly continued to behave in a disorderly manner towards a crew member and had to be placed under restraint.”

The pilot decided to return the aircraft to the airport for the man to be “offloaded”.

The man was arrested by officers from the Airport Police Division upon arrival.

He will be charged in court on April 2 with the offence of behaving in a disorderly manner towards a crew member of an aircraft, which carries a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years.

The police said they treat all acts of violence, threats and disruptive behaviour on board aircraft seriously. Firm action will be taken against anyone who endangers the safety of passengers and crew on board, or threatens the security and order of an aircraft.

“Physical aggression, verbal threats and any interference with aircraft crew’s duties can compromise flight safety,” they added.

All air travellers are reminded to adhere to air safety regulations and conduct themselves responsibly when on board an aircraft.
