A man has gone viral after accidentally paying $450 for a plate of black carrot cake - instead of $4.50.

The blunder was first shared by Instagram user Caleb Tay (@iamcalebtay) on his Instagram Stories, where he joked: "This dude here (ME) just accidentally paid $450 for a plate of black carrot cake. Lmao."

He also posted it on his TikTok account with the text, "POV: you accidentally paid $450 for a plate of black carrot cake", adding in the caption: "The guy said four fifty". The video has since chalked up more than 139,000 views and 2,510 likes.

The video shows the storefront of Hong Sha Li, a carrot cake stall at Chomp Chomp Food Centre in Serangoon Gardens, before cutting to the PayLah screen displaying the $450 transaction. Tay later confirmed in a comment that he managed to get a refund immediately.

A screenshot of his video later surfaced on the popular Instagram page @sgseewhatsee and on Reddit with the title 'Press wrong', where netizens were both amused and sympathetic over the pricey slip-up.

Netizens share own stories

The video sparked a wave of comments from users sharing their own close calls and payment horror stories.

"Same, I accidentally paid $250 for my iced bandung," said a user, adding that the refund took a few days.

"I paid $180 for 100 plus," added another. "Seems i'm not the only one," replied Tay with a laugh.

"Always been curious what's the best thing to do in such a scenario - after alerting the counter staff would they have the authority to return my excess funds?" asked a Redditor.

"I don't know how they do it, but where I used to work got a phone specifically for paynow/qr code, can see the transactions coming in and out and, if needed, can just click on the said transaction, key in the pin, swipe to refund back to the customer. Should reflect in a day or so," another replied.

"I accidentally paid 18 instead of 8 once," shared a Redditor. "The cashier just return me 10 in cash."

Some netizens said this was why they didn't trust payment via apps.

"That's why pay cash better," one netizen insisted.

Others offered suggestions on how to avoid such mistakes. "Pro-tip: keep your spending balance below $30 so you don't even make the mistake of transferring $45," said a Redditor.

"That's why I only put $100 in my bank," said a TikToker.

Not everyone was serious, though.

Said one netizen: "Sorry, cannot refund. Too much admin. But you can have $450 worth of carrot cake."

Another said it must be very good carrot cake: "This 1 michelin 10 star carrot cake sia."

A few joked that they were too poor to make such a costly error.

"That won't happen to me. Don't have $450 available to deduct," said one.
