2 M’sians arrested for smuggling $71k worth of drugs at Woodlands Checkpoint
A 29-year-old Malaysian woman and a 26-year-old Malaysian man were arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore through Woodlands Checkpoint on May 4.
The drugs seized included about 261g of ‘Ice’, or methamphetamine, and 2,261g of cannabis with an estimated street value of more than $71,000, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said in a joint news release on May 7.
ICA officers referred a Malaysia-registered car for enhanced checks after receiving information from ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre.
During the checks, officers uncovered a backpack belonging to the pair in the boot of the car. A plastic bag and two black bundles believed to contain controlled drugs were found concealed beneath a pair of jeans inside the backpack.
CNB officers were immediately alerted and conducted further checks.
The authorities said the drugs seized could potentially feed the addiction of about 470 abusers for a week.
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, those convicted of importing or exporting more than 250g of methamphetamine or more than 500g of cannabis may face the death penalty.
Investigations are ongoing.
