'You all complain about MRT staff, but do nothing when commuters eat and drink on trains': Stomper
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
A commuter has expressed frustration at those who continue to eat and drink on trains despite it being against the rules – and the mess they leave behind for staff to clear.
Stomper Sani said that while passengers often criticise MRT staff for minor issues, many fail to recognise the "dirty work" customer service officers have to handle when spills or litter are left on board.
Photos shared by Sani show a spilled drink inside an MRT cabin, with towels placed over the wet floor. Another photo shows a half-drunk beverage believed to have been left behind by a passenger.
The Stomper said students had caused the spillage after the train passed Dhoby Ghuat MRT station on the North-East Line on Nov 4.
"It was during the morning peak period," he told Stomp on Nov 14.
"I informed the customer service officer onboard when I came in and saw the students ran out of the train.
"The public ignored it. No commuters helped or even stopped these students from drinking and caused the officer on board to have to clear up the mess."
Sani feels that commuters are getting "bolder" with inconsiderate behaviour on public transport.
"Passengers are not afraid to eat and drink on the train and yet no member of the public dares to say anything," he added.
"But when MRT staff stand there, there's a lot of feedback. Yet have you seen all the dirty work these customer service officers have to do if someone spills their coffee or leaves their half-drunk McCafe (beverage)?"
Sani hopes commuters can be more considerate and follow the rules to keep public transport clean for everyone.
