Should dogs be allowed on bus stop benches? Stomper says no
Welcome to Stomping Ground — a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
Should dogs be allowed on public benches? One woman says no as it is “very unhygienic”.
Stomper Lin took issue with a man who regularly lets his pet dog rest on a bus stop bench in front of Block 421 Serangoon Central.
Sharing photos of the man with his dog on May 22 and Oct 6, Lin said the man is “always like this” and “always doing it”.
One picture shows the man and his leashed dog seating on a bus stop bench as he uses his phone.
“People who live around here all recognise him and the dog,” said the Stomper. “And no, it’s not a guide or assistance dog.”
Asked to elaborate on her concerns, Lin told Stomp: “It’s simply unhygienic. The benches are for humans, not dogs.”
Not alone in her concerns
This is not the first time Stompers have expressed concerns over the presence of dogs in public spaces.
In September, a resident said it was “not right” for a woman to feed her dog treats on a playground swing and slide in Choa Chu Kang. This prompted the town council to put up no-pets signs at the playground, leaving pet owners upset.
In January, a resident expressed safety and hygiene concerns after witnessing several pet owners bringing their dogs to a children’s playground in Sengkang despite clear signage stating that dogs were not allowed.
