Pregnant woman says she wasn't given MRT priority seat despite having SG Caring Commuters sign
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
A pregnant woman was not offered a seat on the MRT train despite carrying an SG Caring Commuters sign.
Stomper A, who is seven months pregnant, said the incident occurred on the East-West Line towards Punggol Coast MRT station on Nov 27.
She said she was not given the priority seat despite "standing close" to one, though she did not ask for the seat.
"The people sitting there were busy chatting and did not seem to notice or offer their seats," A recounted.
"There were SG Caring Commuters reminder tags visible nearby, which made the situation quite sad to see. Priority seats are meant to support those who may need extra care, such as pregnant women, the elderly and those with hidden conditions.
"I am sharing this to raise awareness and encourage commuters to be more observant and considerate. A simple act of offering a seat can make a big difference to someone's day.
"I hope this serves as a gentle reminder for all of us to look up, look around, and care a little more."
A similar situation happened to a heavily pregnant Stomper Lim in July, when she was not offered any seats on the MRT and had to stand through seven stops.
Lim noted this was a common sight, adding: "I just feel disgusted because they are all young and healthy, but show no sign of even giving up their seats."
