He was bowled over.

A customer alleged that when he wanted to know why a noodle stall charged him 20 cents for an extra bowl, the stall holder told him it was because of the Government.

Stomper Tony said it happened at the Zion Riverside Food Centre on Dec 16 at around 11.30am. He had gone there for breakfast with his wife and ordered a bowl of noodle soup from the stall.

"I then took a small empty bowl from the stall to share the food with my wife," recounted the Stomper.

"The stall holder, a tall guy, told me it would cost me 20 cents. I asked him what the extra charge was for. He said it was for washing the bowl and it was charged by the Government.

"I told him this was ridiculous. He said I should complain to the Government and not him."

In the end, the customer did not take the extra bowl.

"I have an issue with the additional charge of 20 cents and the stall owner having the audacity to claim that the Government decreed it."

In a similar incident at West Coast Market Square in May, a diner was shocked when she was asked to pay 50 cents for an extra bowl and was even more appalled when she declined and the stall vendor allegedly snatched the bowl back.

Last year, a dessert stall at Marine Parade Food Centre perplexed patrons when it charged $2.60 for an extra bowl.

In another case, a stall owner at 628 Ang Mo Kio Food Centre drew criticism when he started charging 10 cents for every extra plate or bowl that diners requested.
