Yucks! State of toilets at Hougang MRT station will turn you off using them

When nature calls, MRT stations tend to be one of the few reliable places with publicly accessible toilets.

But imagine the horror of rushing to one, only to find unflushed urinals and toilet bowls stained with faeces.

These were exactly what Stomper Anon faced when he visited the male restroom and handicapped toilet at Hougang MRT station on Oct 30 at 7.20am.

Anon also shared photos with Stomp that showed two toilet bowls that appear to be stained with excrement. Multiple urinals – including one squatting urinal and four standing ones – were also filled to the brim with urine.

Discarded litter resembling tissue paper with brown stains can be seen on the floor of the handicapped toilet, along with an open plastic bottle containing murky liquid.

To top it off, the sink area was visibly wet and the sinks themselves appeared to be grimy.

Anon said: "This is really unacceptable. MRT station toilets are supposed to be clean, but this is disgusting."

Anon's complaint closely follows multiple Stompers' concerns about how clean – or not – public toilets at MRT stations have been.

Stomp received feedback from two readers in July and October about the dirty state of toilets at Chinatown MRT station.

SBS Transit had responded to the July incident and said: "While we are reviewing additional measures to improve cleanliness, we also appeal to users to be considerate and responsible. Everyone plays a part in keeping shared spaces, such as toilets, clean and comfortable for others."

Stomp has reached out to SBS Transit for comment on Anon's feedback.
