Woodlands Drive corridor plunged into darkness over CNY, town council cites faulty lights
While homes were lit up for Chinese New Year, a corridor in a Woodlands block was left in darkness over the public holiday.
Stomper Mau said his parents had difficulty navigating the corridor at Block 520 Woodlands Drive 14 after the lights were not working on the first and second day of Chinese New Year (Feb 17 and Feb 18).
"The whole corridor was in darkness. We had to call the town council a few times to get them to turn on the lights," Mau told Stomp.
Mau suggested it was not a blackout, claiming the lights had simply not been turned on.
According to Mau, residents contacted the town council at around 8pm, but the lights were restored only at about 10pm.
A Facebook post by Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council stated that the town council office was closed from Feb 16 to 18, and residents were advised to call the 24/7 Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU) hotline for urgent matters.
"Can barely see where you're walking," Mau said, adding that he does not live with his parents and found the situation concerning.
He shared a photo showing a dim corridor with only a single light visible at the far end.
In response to Stomp's queries, a spokesperson for the Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council clarified that the issue involved faulty corridor lighting.
The town council said it first received feedback on Feb 17 and activated the EMSU at about 8.40pm to investigate. The lights were restored "shortly after", it said.
A second report was received on Feb 18 and the case was referred to a rewiring contractor. The corridor lights were restored after repairs and testing were completed.
"No further faulty lights have been reported since," the spokesperson said, adding that the town council will continue to monitor the situation and work with residents to maintain a safe living environment.
