A ceiling panel in the basement of Ion Orchard fell on the evening of July 3, hitting a shopper on the head and causing her to sustain minor injuries.

In response to queries, a spokesperson for the mall said the incident took place at about 7.50pm at Basement 2.

A staff member attended to the shopper, identified as a 24-year-old woman by Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao.

She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force. The woman is recuperating at home, added the Ion Orchard spokesperson.

The spokesperson said: “We are currently in touch with the individual... and will continue to render our assistance as necessary.”

Meanwhile, the affected area has been cordoned off so that checks and repair work can be done.

Ion Orchard is investigating the cause of the incident and will take “proactive steps” to ensure shoppers’ safety and prevent such incidents from recurring, the spokesperson said.

The Straits Times has contacted the Building and Construction Authority for comments.
