Woman, 70, arrested for pickpocketing wallets from unzipped bags in Yishun since July last year
A 70-year-old woman was arrested for a series of pickpocketing cases at Chong Pang Market And Food Centre at Yishun Ring Road.
The police received several reports of missing wallets in the vicinity between July 24, 2023 to June 13, 2024.
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from CCTV and police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on June 15.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman allegedly picked wallets from people who had their bags unzipped, took out the cash and disposed of the wallets.
The woman is also believed to be involved in other similar offences.
The woman will be charged in court on June 17 with the offence of theft, which carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
You are advised to safeguard their belongings and be vigilant against pickpockets with the following measures:
- Look after your belongings at all times.
- Be cautious when approached by strangers who try to get very close to you.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing excessive jewellery to crowded places.
- Ensure your bag is closed at all times and sling it in front of you.
- Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket.
